In order to reduce air pollution, the Mayor of London has introduced a PS110 million scrappage scheme. The biggest of its kind, it will support Londoners on lower incomes and disabled people to scrap their vehicles that do not meet the ULEZ emissions standards and switch to greener transport methods like cycling, public transport or car clubs.
The scheme is open to residents and businesses based in the London boroughs of the City of London, Westminster and Camden, who own or lease a vehicle registered with an DVLA licence plate ending in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 0.
People on a low income including those receiving certain means-tested benefits and those on Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment, as well as small businesses, micro businesses, charities and sole traders, can apply for a grant payment of up to PS2,000 to scrap their vehicles that do not meet the emission standards. Disabled drivers who own a non-compliant wheelchair accessible vehicle can also apply for the grant to scrap or retrofit their vehicle with new equipment.
A full list of Scrap Your Car in London eligibility criteria can be found on the TfL website, alongside a list of businesses that are providing offers and promotions to help support the ULEZ scrappage scheme and the Mayor’s ambitions to improve London’s air quality. These include discounts on subscriptions, rentals and purchases of bikes, e-bikes, cargo bikes, cars and vans from companies like Brompton, Enterprise and Santander Cycles.
To avoid any confusion about ensuring your car is legally disposed of, be sure you choose an ATF that will send the DVLA a Certificate of Destruction once it’s been destroyed. The DVLA will then mark the vehicle as off road in the National Vehicle Register. A reputable ATF will also be licensed to collect and process scrap metal for recycling. It’s important to check whether a scrap yard is licensed by checking their accreditation with the Environment Agency. If you have any concerns, contact the Environment Agency.
