Invertir - What is an Inverter?

The verb invertir means to invest or revert. It is an irregular IR verb. It is conjugated with the auxiliary avoir. It belongs to the second group of French verbs. This table shows its conjugation in the Imperfect subjunctive tense.

An inverter converts direct current from a battery into alternating current for use with electrical devices. The alternating current creates an electromagnetic field around the inverter and its components. The magnetic field can cause the inverter to generate heat that causes on-resistance, which can reduce efficiency. This heat must be removed from the device to avoid damage to the circuits.

Inverters generate a square wave, which is not as smooth as the sine wave produced by a generator. This can be problematic for some devices that require a steady signal. For example, audio and video equipment may not work well with an inverter. The square wave can also interfere with navigation devices or other electronic equipment that needs a clean, stable signal.

An inverter also requires a Invertir  cooling system to remove the heat it generates. Ideally, this will be a fan or air conditioning unit to prevent the inverter from overheating and damaging its internal circuits. The inverter should be kept in a well-ventilated area, away from flammable materials and anything that could ignite or explode.

It is possible to build an inverter with an MOSFET or an IGBT semiconductor. Both have advantages and disadvantages. The MOSFET has a lower conduction loss and a higher switching frequency, while the IGBT has a high on-resistance and a low switching frequency, but it is less expensive.

The inverter must be connected to a battery with the proper voltage rating. Most RVs use 12-volt batteries, while some larger vehicles may have 24-volt batteries. The inverter must be sized to match the power requirements of the vehicle’s appliances. For example, a small pump and tiny TV may only need a very small inverter, while a full-size RV with a large TV and a heater will need a larger inverter.
