While it is easy for most Americans to pronounce a name like Katie or Charles, Nguyen can be quite tricky for people who aren’t familiar with Vietnamese pronunciation. The first letter, “ng,” is a sound that Westerners often miss or completely ignore. It is important to pronounce the rest of the name as a single syllable. It is also helpful to watch a video demonstration of how the name is pronounced, such as this one.

Nguyen is a writer whose work has been featured at New Dramatists, The Playwrights’ Center and the Ma-Yi Theater Company’s Writers Lab. His plays include Vietgone, Soul Samurai, Alice in Slasherland and Krunk Fu Battle World. He is a member of the New Dramatists and an alumni of the University of Southern California’s MFA in Creative Writing program.

In addition to his writing, Nguyen is an advocate for Asian American rights and issues. He works to give non-Vietnamese US citizens context for the Vietnamese experience and helps to educate them on Asian solidarity.

During the Vietnam War, Nguyen’s grandfather was killed in a typhoon that struck his village. The horror of the event caused Nguyen-Nguyen to question her mortality. After the war ended, Nguyen-Nguyen moved to America and married a soldier. During her time in the United States, Nguyen-Nguyen became fluent in English by watching television shows such as Byugen.id Bewitched and The Six Million Dollar Man and by quoting commercials such as the Salad Tosser informercial.

As a professional athlete, Nguyen competes as a defensive end for the Washington Redskins. In his debut season, he recorded three sacks and 21 tackles. Despite being injured throughout the year, Nguyen made significant contributions to the team’s defense and was named to the NFL Pro Bowl roster for the second time in his career.

Nguyen is an accomplished gymnast who competed for Germany at the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, where he won the gold medal on parallel bars. Nguyen also won a gold medal on the pommel horse at the 2010 European Championships, and has been a part of the German national team since 1995. He trains at TSV Unterhaching under coaches Andreas Hirsch and Jens Milbradt.
