One of the most enduring classics in movie history, French Connection Hello has been remastered and released on Blu-ray. It also includes a documentary on the film's making.
The French Connection (SD 16x9 53mins) - This BBC documentary gives an in-depth look at how the movie was made, with insight from Friedkin, Hackman and Scheider. The interviewees discuss how the film was made, including the casting of Hackman and Scheider, and give some background on the real-life crime and its genesis.
It is based on a true story and was adapted by Ernest Tidyman from the 1969 book of the same name written by Robin Moore. It stars Gene Hackman as Det. "Popeye" Doyle and Roy Scheider as Buddy "Cloudy" Russo, and was directed by William Friedkin.
The movie is a crime thriller set in New York in 1971. The narcotics trade is becoming a major issue in the United States. It is a time when President Nixon was threatening to go after drugs, and the shadow of My Lai massacre loomed over the Vietnam War fiasco.
Detectives Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman) and Buddy "Cloudy" Russo work Narcotics, but they are mostly dealing with low-level dealers. However, one of Popeye's informants alerts him to a major drug deal being made by the French, and the pair jump into it.
They begin to investigate and discover that the French smugglers are a group of Corsican men, led by Jean Jehan, who had been running the narcotics business in Corsica for over a decade. It is a ruthless organization, with members including Auguste Ricord, Paul Carbone and Francois Spirito. They had a reputation for being shady characters, and were reputed to be members of The french connection tina Resistance during World War II.
A lot of the movie is spent in stake-outs and tense chase scenes, as Doyle and his team follow the leads of their informants. They walk, run, drive and use subways to keep their quarry at bay.
It is a very tense movie, with a lot of action and very little dialogue, but it doesn't feel cheesy. The music is done by Bob Ellis and he creates an epic sound for this movie. The remastered audio track is very good with a clear audio quality and the soundtrack is full of eerie, dissonant notes that have a biting effect on the viewer.
The cinematography is quite good with a nice grain pattern and plenty of detail throughout the movie. As you would expect from a movie of this age the print is not perfect but it has been remastered to a great standard.
This is a very good film to watch on a big screen with a great sound system and it will keep you guessing for the rest of the night. It is a must have for anyone who loves movies with great music and tense action sequences.
